Successful Degree Work Placement
Seamus has recently completed the end of his year-long placement at AR. The placement was undertaken as part of Seamus’s BSc (Hons) Construction Engineering Management course at Loughborough University, a program accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). His current university studies encompass a wide range of modules, including Construction Technology, Construction Law, Contract Administration, Estimating, Planning and Cost Management, Building services, and Sustainable Building Design.
Driven by a keen interest in Quantity Surveying, commercials, and operations, Seamus sought an engaging work placement that would offer practical experience in these areas. This ambition led him to a trainee Quantity Surveyor role at AR, a position that aligns perfectly with his career aspirations.
At AR, Seamus took on a variety of responsibilities that have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the industry. His tasks included preparing payment applications and reviewing payment notices, assisting with CVR’s, placing sub-contractor orders, valuing variations, and partaking in contract reviews. Despite being primarily office-based, Seamus also had the opportunity to visit AR’s demolition sites, giving him first-hand experience and broadening his perspective on the practical aspects of the industry.
Seamus reflects on his time at AR and comments “Since the start of my placement AR gave me the chance to get to grips with various responsibilities within the team so I could expand my learning and develop my skills. It has been brilliant to gain an understanding of how my studies have intertwined with on-the-job experience and how both can be used to gain and implement fresh perspectives to each other. Overall, I’ve had a great time at AR, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity they have given to me.”
His proactive approach and dedication have been evident in his work, making him a valuable member of the AR team.
Josh Scriven, Contracts Manager commented “Team AR have enjoyed having Seamus with us for the last 12 months. Seamus started with us as a student who understood commercial principles. It has been a pleasure to watch his character and ability grow as he has learnt how to apply those principles into a contracting world. Seamus made himself an integral, valued part of the team over the period, always getting involved with activities (both work and social).
I wish Seamus all the best in his final year at University, I have every confidence he will excel.”.
